If James Mangold (director for the new Wolverine movie, 'Logan') said this, then now we understand why most Hollywood movies about comic books are doomed to mediocrity before they actually begin filming:
"What I mean by that is, who puts a special branded outfit on when they do good deeds? And why? The only reason you do it is so you can have some sort of trademarked claim and get credit for what you did."
What a load of misleading crap! Super heroes have always put on costumes -masked one's especially -to protect their private lives and the lives of their LOVED ONES. Not to mention that it distinguishes competing forces or individuals in battle -serving as a UNIFORM in that respect! And while we're at it let's take a closer look at what this director supposedly said. Is there something inherently wrong with a character wanting to trademark his look or get credit for what he did? No, there isn't. But this direct thinks or seems to think that there is.
This is a prime example of what I call Hollywood Arrogance in dealing with the comic book industry. Just because they deal more directly with realty via their tool of choice -the camera -these fools feel that they know better than the writers and artists who actually have ended up saving their fucking industry from financial ruin with the powerful fan base that comic book films have. Instead of respecting comic books and filming them AS THEY HAVE BEEN WRITTEN AND DRAWN, these wise-fools figure they know better --and so go on trippy rewriting trips that unfortunately more bozos in high positions at comic book companies allow them to do!!
What's needed is more respect for the comic book industry in Hollywood. Stop pretending that since you can direct a couple of films that all of a sudden you're a goddamn super star writer too and that you have the right to rewrite a character's history and have him doing shit and looking like shit that hasn't been seen beforehand. We still have YET to see Wolverine in his motherfucking costume because of this shitty ass attitude!!!
What's it going to take to appease these Hollywood Honcho Directors with their fancy-dancy camera systems? Another 20 million dollars? 30 million? Will that be enough for them to put aside their huge egos and give fans what they want? Now we got to sit through ANOTHER Wolverine out of costume movie. Gee, he looks like my old man, fighting in his blazer. Wow, that's creative, Hollywood. No, he look more like James Bond with a beard and razors coming out of his knuckles (all ordered by special weapons designer 'Q' by the way).
And of course, the non-thinking bunch of fans will come away screaming, "That was great!! It was awsome!" etc. etc. Never realizing how much they've been cheated out of. Want a clue of how much you are cheated out of when a character appears out of costume for part of a movie or more? Just imagine Darth Vader walking around in a black cloak only. Or maybe with a black ski mask on to boot. Not the same, right? Or lets have Luke Skywalker run around in a white T-shirt and jeans because that's 'more realistic' than the costume he had on. I fucking hate stupidity in visual storytelling because it just robs the hell out of you.
I'm George Alan Booker and I created the character known as Zombie Racer and then everyone and his mother started turning it into shitty video games and smelly gym shoes on the Internet so now it's just all over the damn place. Anyway I used to work in comic books, animation, and TV advertising storyboarding. Now I'm returning to comics again with the start of this website. Check the site ledger on the Home Page (Graphic Storytelling.com and Gallery subheadings listings) for samples of my artwork.
